Dense Weed ID

I'm in Central Coastal Florida. This vigorous, dense weed is taking over faster than my St. Augustine can recover from a recent pool installation. What is it? How do I control it? Or should I keep it and let it be a nearly-maintenance-free lawn replacement?

I live in NE Central Florida. I hate this weed. It is VERY hard to even control; much less eliminate. 2-4D is a herbicide that is supposed to work on it. I have used it with limited success. It requires more than one application. This nuisance has small tap roots every few inches or so, adding to its resistance to treatment.
If anyone has had REAL success in eliminating this headache, please let us know!
