Thanks for your response. What an interesting old book. I see it was published in 1901. I'e saved the link to return to again in the future since I'm always trying to identify something.

It took more state experts yet to identify my weed, although I hold it in the highest regard now as a wild flower of class now rather than a mere weed. It's either Shrubby St. John's Wort or St. Andrew's Cross, which is also a hypericum (St. John's Wort) family member! I believe that when it blooms I'll find it's actually St. Andrew's Cross. It seems these two St. John's Wort members are native to the Eastern U.S. and Shrubby St. John's Wort also to Eastern Canada. I'm attaching the USDA link to St. Andrew's Cross, which it looks more like.
