Are these weeds?

Hi,
I am new to North Carolina and not sure if these are actually plants I need to leave or if they are weeds I need to try to get rid of before they take over. Any help would be so much appreciated!
This is everywhere in my wooded area. It doesn't look like any weed I have ever seen but it is all over one area and spotty in others. Wondering if it is something from a hanging basket I had back there in the fall or a week or some kind of ground cover the previous owners had????

When you aren't sure what something is do you usually just let it grow or pull it out?
