Maybe a silly question, but what's wrong with liverworts? I'm always pleased when a new colony of mosses or liverworts appear in my garden. If I need to plant something where they are growing I just move the colony a small distance and plant whatever it is I want. I'd rather see the green than bare dirt, And since they don't get tall enough to shade out any desirables I kind of consider them as a "living mulch", (keeps the soil moist and hinders weed seeds from taking hold)...

Doublemom, can you cover it? It's not a cure, but I've been top dressing beds, extra depth where there is liverwort, using Gardner & Bloome soil building compost (comes in bales) Plants love it, it slowly conditions soil...I don't know if liverwort needs light to thrive or if I'm gradually improving my soil conditions and that is holding it at bay, just know that I have much less liverwort than I used to. If it does show up again somewhere mid season, I toss on a few more handfulls of the G&B compost.

Safer was making a spray for algae and liverwort (I can recall something about fats, but nothing more specific)...that was also a temporary fix, but a combination of Safer and top dressing might give your beds some improvement.

And these days, I regularly remove the top layer of potting medium from containerized plants I purchase before I put the plants into my garden.

trong floral-smell so I keep it in the garage. Brush killer etc doesn’t rid me of it. I’m thinking about use a broom and coating the whole sidewalk with the powder.

Marchantia polymorpha, the most common form of liverwort found in the PNW, will not grow on concrete. So what is growing on your sidewalk may be something different. And I would NOT recommend using a laundry powder in the garden!! It will contaminate the soil (at least temporarily) and make whatever else you want to grow struggle.

As noted previously, liverwort is really quite harmless if a bit of a nuisance. Just scrape it off if you don't like it. It won't harm the plants at all.

btw, herbicides like brush killer are not formulated to kill mosses, lichens or liverworts. They are a different type of life form than that of vascular plants and the herbicide will have no effect.
