Pull the weeds and if you can't pull the new berry out ut off with a long knife under the ground. The other choice is to use a sharp hoe to cut the vegetation off. Never use weed killer in an area that you are going to eat vegetables from.

If you are not planning on doing vegetables mow the area to reduce the number of weeds.

Ask someone you trust to look at the area you might have rubarb or aspargus or one of many other plants that you might want to keep.

If you aren't going to be gardening in the area right away, you may consider knocking the weeds down with a mower or string trimmer, then covering with plastic. I'd never used plastic until I moved to KY, but the weeds are so aggressive here, it's the only way I can manage my garden. It's also a good way to turn a part of lawn into a veggie garden. If you want to keep the berry bushes, or anything else that comes up. you'll have to weed around them, but then you can piece plastic or newspapers around them after cleaning out the weeds. Good luck!
