Do you mean a carpet replacement for the old carpet?

I prefer the look ( and ease of cleaning ) of hardwood stairs myself.... What is under the carpet?

We tried just having the stained stairs with no runner and the dog fell down the stairs and my husband slipped as well. I finally installed a runner and we love it. Get something that doesn't show dirt.

I have slipped down a wood staircase twice. A well-anchored runner is my suggestion for you. Get it in a medium dark patterned carpet so it will not show dirt as fast.

I keep fantasizing about taking up the runner on my staircase and just having the natural wood, but then I imagine my two dogs clattering up and down, tripping over each other in their rush to be first, and tripping up one of us in the process. So I keep my boring runner.

I find bare stairs slippery, dusty and noisy. I would suggest a wool carpet for great wear in a sisal color, it will blend with most decors.

There is actually a nonslip clear finish you can use on wood floors to minimize the risks of wood stairs.

If you're just doing the stairs - consider checking for remnants at your local carpet store. They may have something neutral that you like.
In my opinion, I prefer the look of a runner instead of wall to wall on the stairs.

I am getting ready to take the carpet off my stairs and try refinishing the steps in my 115 year old Queen Anne home. I'm planning to buy a sheet of corkboard and stain it the same color as the steps. Someone posted their project on here (Houzz) and it looked great!! The corkboard isn't slippery, its quiet, and very easy to do yourself. Do a little research on it. It's definitely what I plan to use!!

Oh....... you also cut the cork board in rectangles 2 inches smaller than your steps, and they are kind of like rugs, only better. MUCH better
