It is oxalis.

I have oxalis and it doesn't look like that. Wrong habit, wrong leaf-shape. Oxalis has three heart-shaped leaves on a stem. This has three oval leaves on a stem.

That's why I said black medic.

It's an annual but comes in very thickly before flowering and dying.

The black medic has 'groups' of the little yellow flowers which look like clumps or balls on the stem.

These have only one yellow flower on each stem.

My daughter-in-law goes to VT and asked a student friend of hers, that is in the Department of Plant Pathology, Physiology and Weed Science what it was.

Going on the two pictures (which may not be that good) that was what the friend said.

That is to say Yellow Woodsorrel, has three heart-shaped leaves.

I just don't see any heart-shaped leaves on this at all.

Name That Plant is usually a sure bet at plant ID. :)
