Supersonic vs Big Boy vs Big Beef

Howdy ,

I always grow a few Big Beef and was wondering how it compared with the other two as far as taste. I grow mostly heirlooms but like Big Beef and was wondering how it rates by folks that have grown Big Beef and/or Big Boy and/or Supersonic.

THANKS !!!

I have not grown Big Beef, but I think Supersonic, which I grow every year, is more productive and tastes better than either Big Boy or Big Girl. I have grown the latter 2 in the past but switched to Supersonic.

Big Beefsteak is my favorite. I have one that is around 7 ft tall now and has quite a few tomatoes on it. I have two Big Boys that are not quite that tall, have been blooming for awhile but have not set a tomato on the vine yet. I have not grown Supersonic.

Big Beef is my only non-heirloom variety these days. It used to be Celebrity, but Big Beef is much better.

For hybrids, we am growing Beefmaster and Jet Star this year, for beefsteak- and regular type tomatoes. I have switched from Celebrity. Have grown Supersonic before and it is great, but I wanted to try Beefmaster this year.

I have tried most of the tomatoes with Boy or Girl in the name and don't much care for any of them.

I have tried all three and this year am growing Big Boy & Supersonic, as well as Big Girl.

Big Beef is always and I mean always unproductive for me. Who knows why. Big Boy is always productive and I prefer the flavor over Big Girl. Supersonic is a little better flavor, but smaller for me (a lot smaller)and less productive then Big Boy.

My favorite hybrid is Bush Big Boy for flavor, size and production and is less suspectable to early blight then the others mentioned (for me). I was unable to find any plants this year. Really disappointing.

I've grown all three. You asked for taste as the basis of comparison, and of the three choices, I vote strongly for Big Beef. I now grow it every year as the hybrid beefsteak of choice, because it is realiable, productive, and most of all, tastes very good. I also grow a couple of Better Boys (rather than Big Boy), I think they are similar to Big Boy, but more disease resistant. The Better Boys are more productive, and good, but not nearly as good tasting as Big Beef, but I grow them because I know I will get a lot of good looking, better than average tomatoes, whatever the weather or pest and disease situation. Supersonic is a popular tomato in the Northeast, where I live. I don't think it is better than Big Beef, and I've given it up to make room for more heirlooms, but there is nothing wrong with it.

I was overjoyed to find Beefmaster this year. Have had tremendous luck growing them and love the flavor. Rather impressive in size too. I really think mudpye and kubotabx2200 will be pleased with 'em.

Thanks for the positive thoughts, I am looking forward to my first season of growing Beefmaster this year.
