Could it be johnson grass?

I did a google search and I think it is johnson grass. I can't verify the seed heads because I've always cut before it reached that stage.

Because glyphosate products have been used so much to try and control Quack Grass, Johnson Grass, and some others they are developing ways that enable plants to ignore that stuff so it no longer provides control. Both Quack Grass and Johnson Grass spread by rhizomes, as well as seed, and the best means of control is top dig out the rhizomes and keep any plants growing from setting seed.
I find the glyphosate products much too expensive to use.

I agree the glyphosate products are much too expensive. I did try it on one small clump and the top is going dead, but don't feel optimistic about it getting the rhizomes.

Digging out is what I've been doing, but this year there is so much of it. A small spot I've been digging out for at least 2 or 3 years and there is still a couple there - and the last time I eradicated it there (I thought) was just a few weeks ago.

I've never let the plants set seed, so the seed is blowing in from elsewhere, or the birds?

Both Johnson Grass and Quack Grass, and a couple of others, spread by those rhizomes as well as seed which can be distributed by birds or the wind.
If, when digging these out, you leave a bit of the rhizome behind that will grow into a plant and send the rhizomes out and about to produce evenmore plants. I have seen growth nodes on these rhizomes every 4 inches.

I don't have Johnson grass but I believe Snow on Mountain or something that reseambles it.and another weed which are giveing me a big headaches. I am just tempted to let it take it all over. I am 80 and getting arthritus all over. I don't have anyone to help me close and my husband is too busy helping our son farm. I love my plants I have there.

I know just the tiniest bit of rhizone left behind will produce more. I try my best to get it all; at least when it grows again from a piece left behind it is easier to dig out. It really seems like a losing battle, but I'm not giving up - not yet anyway.

finchelover - I sure can understand your being tempted to let your weeds take it all over.
