What can I plant underneath trees

I live in Northern Illinois. I am tire of trying to mow over tree roots and getting the blade caught on tree roots. Weeds also tend to grow there. I was thinking about planting some native plants underneath the tree that are fairly hardy and can take care of itself.

My first thought was to include some ferns. Does anyone have any additional ideas, especially flowering plants? Since it's underneath a tree, it would have to be a low light plant.
