Weed that killed my clematis?

Hello all! I'm new to this forum (as I am to gardening). I have noticed a few clumps of some kind of weed in a couple of my beds and it looks to have killed my beautiful new clematis. Argh!! This does not seem to be an easy weed to get rid of. There are clumps of sprouts. The roots remind me of alfalfa sprouts. There are these little white pods. Can anyone identify them? Thanks so much!!
