Be prepared to apply a fairly deep layer of mulch as soon as you remove the fabric. As in right away. Mulch can be ornamental bark, wood chips, etc., or a combination of things. The mulch should be at least three inches deep and will need to be topdressed every now and then.

I have found, after soil is covered with plastic, that most often the soil has a putrid odor indicating a lack of air in that soil. Sometimes I have also found the soil to be compacted, depending on the soil type.
Look at the soil after removing that plastic to see how much organic matter is there because that OM will help aerate and open up that soil, allow air in and help uncompact it. Once the soil has adequate levels of OM it can then be mulched with vegetative materials.
