weed or grass

i've been getting my lawn treated by chem-lawn this year ... i haven't noticed any broadleaf weeds ... what i do have is grass/weeds that grow a long staight stem that forks at the top and has black seeds on each fork ... i'd say that 1/4 of my yard has this ... could someone tell me what this is ... is this grass or is this a weed ... whatever it is it grows very fast ... i can't keep up with it ... if it's weeds i can call them and let them know i'm having a problem with it

You have bahia grass in your turf. Perhaps it came in a seed mix that you applied at some point in time and didn't look at the varieties of seed. However, bahia is a common right-of-way grass, making it available to seed itself into the ornamenal lawn.

Ask your lawn people about control of bahia (pronounced buh-HAY-uh) and see what they say. HA! It's a toughie!
