Yes, you'll see them all winter. We save our black walnuts for them - it helps keep them out of our bird feeders.

Hi Rodeo........ so glad I found someone else that enjoys their antics. Mine eat everything from left over eggrolls (the folks at the restaurant roared over the pic of one sitting with the eggroll in his little paws,,just feasting on it ) to peanuts in the shells. They actually come to the patio door in the morning when we're having coffee..and if we ignore them/ actually bang on the door until we throw out their peanuts. Some scurry off with them..and others will sit and munch them. Some even run over our cat to get them!! I espec love to watch them bungie jump on one of the saplings out back. Have fun!! :o)

i wish i had more. i only have 2 and mainly one is a regular. you may ask how i can tell the 2 apart? ok this may sound odd and im not a squirrel perv but one has bigger titties than the other lol. this must be a female who just had or has babies somewhere. i wish we had more squirrels, something must be killing them, maybe a hawk? we have tons of rabbits, one would think if it were a predator they would be declining too

You'll definitely see them. I built a squirrel den and mounted it in our oak tree, and we've had two living there every winter since. When it snows, they leave their house, climb one 20 foot limb to a maple tree, then from the maple tree to the rain tree where their feeder is mounted. I call it the squirrel super highway. There are 5 or 6 others that visit any given day besides the ones that live in the tree.

They come up to the door into the garage all year, and will come right my way if I come out. When we had one bad snow last year, he tried and tried to reach the door, but it was too deep and he gave up. This led me to clear a path for them, of course.

Dave---I love your site. Now - I thought I had some "butterball" squirrels, but yours beat mine. Talk about spoiled, uh?? LOL I adore the houses for them... espec the one with the "balcony" with rails and all....

RodeoSquirrel since one is so obviously a mommy, she probably has a brood she will be weaning soon. Since they come to your house, this is probably where they will bring the babies to show them where to eat. Soon you should have lots of them. Especially if you offer them suet along with seeds and nuts this winter. Good luck.

anyone good on squirrel language? well 2 were sorta fighting today, one chased the other away. then about an hour later up in my neighbors tree i hear a squirrel calling, now it wasnt that typical bark chatter it was that screaming whining drunken duck sound, lol this is the only way i know how to describe it...is anyone familiar with this sounds meaning? is it an aggressive call? or a baby?
i know some folks think of squirrels as pests but i really do love them, and theres enough food to go around for everybody :o)
i think ill make them peanut butter sandwhiches hehe

Navymom, I'm glad you like the site. I've got tons of other pictures of the little fellas, but don't have room for them all. The house got it's "rail" as a deterrent to a couple of rather persistent raccoons. I've seen plans for fancier ones than ours though. This site has several plans for dens and feeders.

RodeoSquirrel, I don't have a firm grip on the vernacular, but the two that stayed in the den last winter had a most memorable exchange one day. I looked out the window one afternoon, and one was chattering at the other on top of the den. The recipient moved to a limb, only to be followed at and chattered at some more. He moved to a different tree, where the other one followed and chattered at him some more for around 10 minutes. He moved to another tree. The other followed and scolded him. He moved to yet another tree, and was followed and barked at some more. Every single time the one squirrel would move, the other would follow, sit about a foot away and just chatter away while the other sat there with his little "hands" folded in front, seemingly taking his medicine.

I have some video of it, if I can remember which tape I have it on. It was sooo funny. I called them Ralph and Alice after the Honeymooners the rest of the winter.

I LOVE that house!!! I want one...only I want to buy it-DH is not skilled with a hammer and nails! And I thought I spoiled them by giving them a "munch box" mounted to an oak tree for their peanuts! Oh...did you ever see them bury a nut and then pat it down with their little paws? That's my fave!!

I am so glad I found this site. I have nine squirrels that live in my yard I live in Michigan so the winters can be crue> My squirrels get Nature Valley bafs every morning the Peanut ones. My husband thinks I'm crazy because I spend so much money on them but I enjoy them and worry about them, if they don't have enough peanut bars they will let me know by knocking on my kitchen window, I'm glad to see their are more of us out there that love their squirrels

Try Chuckanut squirrel mix (pumpkin seeds -great protein)
sunflower seeds corn & hazlenuts..mine love it.
They also love any hard shelled nut. Happy feeding they are a true joy...
