If there are any nightshades left, pull 'em. And bindweed is just as nasty but in a different way. Cardboard would work quite well on the nightshade seeds, but the bindweed may be working its way over to another part of the garden. Nevertheless, the cardboard's worth doing. Moisten it and layer shredded leaves, grass clippings and peat moss or other organic materials on top. 12 sheets of newpaper can replace the board. Just make sure that the cardboard or paper is solidly covered so that moisture doesn't wick away. Then let the worms do their work through the winter and you'll end up with a wonderful planting area.

I saw on a tv show that in Britain, they put containers of vinegar next to bindweed plants and let the foliage sit in it probably as long as possible. Supposedly the vinegar goes into the roots to eventually kill the plant. Might be worth trying. Maureen
