Unpopular Bird Feeder

I recently hung a bird feeder from the edge of my roof at a height of about 5 feet. It's been a couple of days now and I doubt that any feathery friends have been frequenting it. Now, I don't know much about birds, so I'm just wondering how they go about finding food that doesn't occur naturally (fruits in trees, worms in the ground, etc). Is it by sight? Smell? Should I leave some sort of trail leading them to the food, or will they find it eventually?
