I have found that it usually takes a while for them to find it. They also might be afraid to go to something so close to the house so you might want to try to put a post out in the yard. They like feeders that are out in the open, but close enough to trees, bushes,etc so they can quickly fly to a higher place.I also found that they are more attracted to feeders at a certain time of year (when food in the wild is not readily available.) I started my birding adventure by lying food on the ground. It did get the birds to start coming around.

I would just be patient, sometimes it takes awhile for birds to feel comfortable and/or take notice to your feeder.

They will find it - squirrels if you have any around, will too.
Another good reason for putting the feeder farther away from the house is the amount of seed hulls that will be falling on the ground. If it's near your patio, or other area you want to keep looking nice you will probably get a pretty good unattractive pile to contend with. Also, where birds gather, birds will poop.
