What is this weed??

Hello,
Recently I have moved into a new house and the front lawn seems to be covered in this weed that's clings onto the ground. It is very strange but it doesn't seem to have any leaves. If I was to pull it up I would have no grass underneath. Please can some one tell me what this is or how to treat or get rid of this??

It isn't dodder. There's only one species in the UK and it doesn't look like this. Can you supply any more pictures? What is the scale of this plant? How thick are the stems? Are they slightly rubbery? If you pull it up does it have long white roots? It is possible you have a diabolical infestation of bindweed, in which case I feel for you.
