Size Discrimination by a Squirrel

My daughter is a student at U. Penn. It was a warm day so she put an ill fitting screen into a half open window. There was a 2" gap screen and window on one side. Her roommate had a basket of apples in the dorm room from a orchard picking trip. She returned to find two medium sized apples on the window sill and the remains of a large half eaten apple on the floor. She attributed this to a messy roommate. However, when the roomate returned she acquired an increased appreciation for the intelligence of squirrels. Apparently a squirrel entered the room and decided to take the apples to places unknown. The squirrel determined that it could not get a medium sized apple out of the room through the gap in the screen. It took two tries to figure this out. The squirrel did remove every small apple from the room based on the diminished number of apples in the basket. For good measure the squirrel ate a large apple before it completed the job.
