Bacterial Stem Rot ??'s

my garden has bacterial stem rot. i've already lost 3 plants to it and it looks as though i'm going to lose 2 more. this will leave me with only two plants. :(

i'm afraid it will spread to the other two plants i have, is there any way to prevent this?

is bacterial stem rot a type of blight? is it really in my soil now? how in the WORLD did this make its way into my garden? i bought from a nursery..could this be the source? could the straw mulch i used be a carrier?

also, are the fruits safe to eat? i have some good sized green tomatoes on the two plants i need to pull and i'd hate to lose them.

thanks,

Andrea
