I've never grown it, but I do have Mapleleaf Viburnum (Viburnum acerifolium) on my list of possibilities for shady spots. Both the UConn site I've linked to below and the William Cullina book list it as being able to deal with full shade. I find those my 2 most reliable references, so I think you'd be okay with it, but I've seen it listed as only able to deal with partial shade.

I have some cultivars of Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia) in partial shade, but I remember somebody on one of the forums saying something to the effect of it would grow in a closet. I haven't seen butterflies on mine yet, but it is supposed to be a nectar plant, and supply seeds to small mammals and birds. I do like how it looks and its fragrance.

From someone who has a flourishing shade/woodland garden here in NJ, I offer you the following:

Clethra alnifola (is fine)
itea
aronia 'brilliantissima' or even 'meloncarpa'
hydrangea

As you have but 8' linear feet, I'd opt for the clethra or aronia and even itea. The former are upright growers with the itea able to be interplanted amongst the clethra or aronia. You'll be able to at least make it interesting with a combination of these plants.

Birdsong 72 I do have more than 8' but have 2 oakleaf hydrangea, a calycanthus, a serviceberry, and a witch hazel to work around, or with. All no more than 4 yrs old. It is helpful to hear from someone who has already established a shade/woodland garden. I will also try either the clethera or aronia with the itea. I've been watching the shade evergreen thread and hope to incorporate an inkberry or 2.
I posted 1st on the shrubs forum in a more general way and was directed to this forum. There is just an over whelming amount of information to digest.
