shrubs for shade

I have a small, 3 ft. tall rusted chainlink fence ,in rather deep shade for

about 8 ft., I'd like to cover with some type of native planting-a hedgerow. Behind the little fence is a wooden 6 ft. fence. Above is a large white oak, under that is a fence line group of Japanese Strax limbed up. Is there any planting that could work here? There was a spindly line of privet I removed. Holly does self seed there but only grows a foot and looks sickly. A small garden of ferns, partridgeberry, bloodroot, jack-in-the-pulpit , labrador violet and other spring empherals grow in front.
