FWIW, I have read that for solanaceous plants (tomato, potato, pepper, and egg- plant), it's best to rotate with cereal crops (vs. legumes). But I haven't tried it.

Two years ago I sowed winter wheat, last year rye grass. I liked the wheat far more.

In very late April or early May, I mow the foliage down to the dirt. It goes into a compost bin along with leaves I save from fall. The roots get tilled into the dirt where they decompose.
