It's really never too late for these. The way they were handled prior to the cell pack was to be sown in late spring, grown on in a nursery bed and planted in their final locations in early fall, covered for winter and then blooms in spring through early summer. It's a lot of work but when I've done it this way the plants are far superior to what you get in a cell pack.

Thanks Dave! Are you saying you overwinter them?? Or they're reseeding? Sorry, I'm new to pansies.

I have sprouts though! A bunch of them popped up yesterday. :)

They overwinter if they are covered.

milwdave, Do they have to be covered to the extent that the tops stay alive, without rotting, or do they die back like strawberries and restart from near the crown?
I think you are a zone and a half warmer than here, so was wondering if it would be feasible for us to try it :)

Not sure about zone 4...I think 5 is probably the limit but it would only be your time if you try it. All I do is cover them with evergreen boughs...just to keep them from growing when the soil is frozen. They seem to do fine.

That sounds like a simple enough idea. Worth a try :)
