tell about moon flowers

i just have t tell you this.,last spring i had some moon flower bulbs[ or what ever you call them] you know, the round prickly things that fall off in the fall? well, i had some from a year ago, and i just picked them up and laid them some where..si thought i'd try something. i had a corner in my yard where i had a pusssy willow tree taken down and i opened the 'thing] where all of the seeds are. is shoke them to the ground and just stomped on them and walked away. in about 2 weeks i had moon flowers growing exactly where i had stomped them into the ground.about 10 individual plats grew.. to about 3 feet tall.now what do do with them? just let them grow and flop?they arent near anything where i put them on a trellis. any one have any ideas?

If you are talking about the Morning glory relative they require a trellis in most cases.

If they do not find anything to twine around they sometimes get into a cycle where the leader (growing tip) self terminates and then regrows. This keeps them short for a long while.

Generally I would advise having a trellis of some sort in place before the seeds germinate so the vines can find it and start twining ASAP.

I also received some seeds from a friend of mine who lives in Texas last year that she told me were moonflower. When I planted them, I found they were actually a white datura. The common names are sometimes mixed up. Anyway, daturas usually grow about three feet tall, their flowers are larger and more tube shaped then morning glories and they have a heavenly scent. They don't need trellises. I was wondering if maybe thoses were the seeds you received?

Sure sounds like datura, commonly called moonflower as opposed to moonvine.

Real pretty, but all parts are toxic, so wash up good after handling...

This sounds like Datura to me....those prickly seed pods. And, yes, it is hallucinagenic so be careful when handling those pods when fresh and green.

Otherwise it grows like a weed and you should be very happy with it. The flowers are gorgeous.

All I know is I have NEVER grown a great Moonflower,either an early frost kills them or I do not start them early enough here from seed (I live in southcentral WI). Well this year I will have the most beautiful moonflower,IF IT KILLS ME!

You can always start Datura's early indoors- I will be starting mine soon... and then plant them out when the night temps are not so chilly. Once they hit the garden dirt they will take off and you will have blooms well before frost!

There are two plants that share the common name 'moonflower'. One is the Ipomea which grows like a morning glory vine which, I must admit, I have NEVER had bloom here. and the other is a Datura which is more of an herbaceous shrub with silvery green foliage and incredibly large, upright flowers. The flowers are heavilly scented. This is also called Angel's Trumpet. Both are hallicinagenic.

I think there is some confusion here as to which one is being grown.
