I haven't seen the seed listed by any commercial seed company.
In the past, I have obtained seed from the North American Rock Garden Society's Seed Exchange. There were some on the 2010 list (now closed). Membership required to participate.

Plants are sometimes listed by Native Plant Nurseries, but they are outrageously expensive!

As an alternative, you might list your request on the Native Plant Exchange Forum.

The New England Wildflower Society might have them but they are taking a year off in 2010 from seed sales. They do have Hepatica acutiloba in a qt container for $12.

It is probably expensive because the plants do not produce a great deal of seed and they exhibit epicotyl dormancy. That is germination requires a cold season followed by a warm season and then another cold season before the shoot will break dormancy. So any plant you buy would be at least 2 years old and probably older.

I have plenty of Virginia bluebells babies for trade, some may be pink instead of blue but no promises. Would like some hepatica if you are interested. The babies transplant really well. also have Virginia waterleaf. Sandy

I've read that Hepatica seeds should be sown fresh, which may be another reason for higher prices you've seen on plants. The babies that pop up in my garden are quite small and grow slowly, so I imagine most nurseries propagate by division.
