I have. It works fine as long as you mix well with various types of organic material. Till the area for a couple of years, to ensure good mixing, and let the worms do the rest.

Where I lived years ago, I had very hard packed clay soil for my gardens. My hubby had to use a pick axe to break it up. I didn't know much about gardening then. We had gotten some fine sand from my family's farm and brought it back home. We added a lot and it really helped to make it looser. After that, I just had to use a hand shovel. A couple of years after that, I learned about adding compost, leaves and such. It turned into a great gardening area. For a fast way of loosening up the soil, sand is good, but adding the other things really makes it better.

I just didn't want that sand to go to waste. My neighbor would have dumped it in our woods if I didn't take it. That article in "Horticultural Myths" was very informative! I printed it, as a matter of fact. I can understand mixing in the correct amount of sand w/clay is important. I also mix in compost and well rotted manure whenever I dig a new hole.

Sorry. I couldn't even finish reading the short article. Perc tests in the field are the reality. The melting glacier mixed all kinds of combinations of sand and clay.

Any one in Wisconsin living next to to a naturally formed concrete block devoid of plantlife?
