When can I transplant bluebells?

Hi all,

If I get a big enough rootball, can I transplant flowering bluebells now without hurting them? Its okay if they aren't pretty the rest of this spring, but I need to move them, and wanted to be sure it wouldn't kill them. Just give them some superphosphate when planting? Thanks.

What zone are you? How big are they? Most early spring seedlings can be transplanted. As a rule you transplant after they flower if they are early flowering. It doesn't mean you will kill them, it means they won't flower this year if too much shock is undertaken by the plant.

Hi arcy,
I'm in zone 5, and the plants are just ready to flower. I think I'll wait until after that. I didn't know if they did okay with transplanting any time. Thanks.

The best time is after they flower and as the foliage is yellowing and wilting. They're easy to find and have already done their business of storing some energy in the roots. They'll probably survive if you have to dig them while still blooming, they just won't have as much fuel to work with for next year.
