Trumpet Vine / Pool

Hi All,

We are trying to finish up the landscaping near our pool. I was at the garden center and picked up a trumpet vine, thinking it would add interest to our fence. Now I am concerned that this may have been a mistake. I am reading that they are invasive, and send up suckers. It would be about 12 feet from the pool, and also up about 4 feet since it is above our rock wall. We are in Madison, zone 4-5??.

Has anyone here had problems with trumpet vines near their pools? We have a vinyl liner pool.

Also - is a trumpet vine really invasive in Wisconsin?? Or is this just a problem in warmer climates?

Yes. Yes it is. It suckers tremendously as it gets older. However, I have heard that the Mdme Galen variety is much less likely to do this. However I have no experience with this variety so I cannot say with certainty if this is true.

Thanks for the info, Dave. I will have to check to see what variety I have. I may end up pulling it out and calling it a loss. I really don't want to battle with an invasive. It took me about 5 years to eradicate mint from my former garden (didn't want to use chemicals on it).

I may consider planting it in the ground but in a 5 gal bucket w/the bottom cut out. Not sure if it would send runners underneath, though.
