Cat Facing

Maybe we could collect some pictures here of cat facing and later this could be linked to the FAQ's

This is a Cherokee Purple - first of the season for me. This fruit has catfacing on the very bottom - just visible - and I wonder if this is also CF?

I'm pretty sure that's not cat facing

I can't see any catfacing on the bottom, but what are the spots on the side of the tomato or is that a photography issue?

About the FAQ issue. Did you read the lenghthy thread here recently about the FAQ's and what can and can't be done?

it would be impossible to do FAQ's for all biotic ( caused by infectious agents) and abiotic problems ( no infectious agents involved) such as catfacing. And all of those are readily available by going to Google IMAGES as well as at other places online.

But do read that long thread that appeared after I initiated a thread here encouring folks to please read the FAQ's before posting as well as doing some searches here at GW or elsewhere b'c I think it will give you a better idea of what's involved with adding, or even deleting FAQ material.

Maybe I should even bump up that thread since there are still so many folks asking the same questions about blossom drop and BER and other common problems and those two, for instance, are in the FAQ's.

Carolyn, who notes that almost every year here since I've been a member someone starts an UGLY FRUIT thread and there are many many pictures of catfacing. One year folks even voted on the UGLY FRUIT winner. LOL

I think the ugly fruit thing would be fun... IF I HAD ANY FRUIT! Yes, I'm getting anxious :)

I've had that -whatever-the-heck-it-is-above- and it always seemed to me (I'm not an expert nor do I play one on TV AND I don't advertise to be the sharpest tool in the shed BUT here I go anyway) an area where the skin was damaged somehow and the inside of the tomato has had to harden over to the elements... I've let tomatoes like that mature (and yes I ate them - I'll pretty much eat anything that isn't rancid but another story in and of itself) and when you 'peel' that dark dried spot off it's like it was the gel around the seed at one point...

What caused that 'damage' I have no idea - could it be a fungus among us or abiotic/biotic or a creepy crawly...??

Carolyn, This fruit was hit by a falling hickory nut and took the damage in the left forground when it was small. As it grew, it "Rolled" over to this orientation. The damage on the right is of unknown origin, although I have looked extensively for Hornworms. There is classic catfacing on the bottom. Just a bit of it is visible near the water drops at the bottom of the fruit.

Thanks, I'll go spend a few hours in the FAQ's.

But that's not what I meant when I posted above. ( smile)

I meant looking at ther recent thread here about the FAQ's.

I'll try to find it later and link to it here in this thread if you don't beat me to it. LOL

Okay, I bumped up the FAQ thread. Also, I bumped up one with some pictures I took a while back. I was wondering if you or the others could help identify the little green critter.

I understand that using a commercially stored picture presents problems, but I still own the copyright on any I've taken and can do what I wish with them. If the website here could store the pictures internally within the site, I would be willing to donate any of mine that you folks feel are helpful. I am assuming that one of the
Dave's we see here is the site's creator.(I could be wrong). I am sure there are others here who would also donate their pix's.

No, no Dave was the creator of this site.

A man by the user name of Spike created GW many many years ago. Tomatoes used to be in the veggie Forum but there were so many tomato questions that Spike created the Tomato Forum. and then many of us asked for a separate disease Forum as well as a picture Gallery.

Spike sold GW just a few years ago.

Many of the group that was here several years ago moved elsewhere b'c there were several folks who posted here who weren't the kindest people and many nasty threads occurred.

The thread you brought up I don't think is the one I'm referring to although if I go back now to look I lose this post, LOL, so when i have time I'll try to find it, it's quite recent and was started by me with a title I can't remember but imploring folks to check the FAQ area and Search areas before posting/

BTW, anything posted here, as in pictures, becomes the property of GW if you read the fine print.

I'll try to find that thread b'c I know if would help folks here to understand the problem re FAQ's and doing new ones, etc.

here's the one I was thinking of but it turns out the one you bumped up I think is the much better one.

    Hi all,

Interesting thread. I posted a cat-facing tom pic earlier this year. I think I won ugliest (not sure) but it was a classic. I didn't know what it was at the time and it was my first tomatoe of the year. I though I had fed my plant some nuclear waste by mistake. Here is the pic enjoy but look quickly or you will have retina damage. Aloha.
