Does anyone have experience growing Kirengeshoma in full shade? The location I have in mind only gets about one hour of dappled shade. The location is the west face of my house which is surrounded by large trees. Would Kirengeshoma do well in full shade or would it only grow weakly and not flower? I am in Chicago.
I have one on the north side of my house in northern Wisconsin. It gets very little (if any)late afternoon sun. It always grows to about 5 feet and flowers very well. It is a great plant for heavy shade. I've divided it once and am planning to divide it again next spring.-- It's about 5 years old.
This plant does indeed grow and flower well in full shade. The root competition from large trees may, however, be a problem. Kirengeshoma needs a lot of moisture to do well.
My plants seemed to prosper when they were given more sun!
I agree they like adequate moisture. The one I have that has really come on nicely is in a northeast exposure. The soil is deep, rich and moist. The other two, in a more woodland setting have not put on the growth of the first. They do their thing, but there is little hint of what they COULD become.
Still, though, a very nice plant... lovely foliage, interesting flowers and very uninsistant in requirements.
Mine is now in its third summer, and is just lovely -- for a plant that dies to the ground each winter, it is amazing how large it is by midsummer.
I did do one thing different this year -- in Spring I released several thousand lacewing eggs in the woodland garden (at least I THINK I did -- those things were too small to see) and so this year there are no nibble holes in the leaves. My K. palmata thinks it's in a moist spot -- the hose and I have it fooled!
