Mine aren't blooming right now. They bloom on & off most of the summer/fall. They set seeds like crazy. Then sprout all over the garden.

I haven't noticed seeds on these plants. Buy might I be surprised! Do you fertilize? I think I'll share some of the 20-20-20 that I mix up for the brugs...unless I am cautioned otherwise

I have had a burgundy hardy hibiscus for about 7 years now. Mine has been reliably cold hardy and has never required winter protection. I fertilize with a balanced fertilizer a couple of times a year when the whole bed gets fertilized. They do set seed, but I have not had volunteers because I deadhead to encourge bloom. No matter what I do, mine stops blooming in late summer although it continues to put out new foliage. It also starts losing its leaves earlier than most of my other herbaceous perennials. I know there are many varieties and perhaps others bloom longer into fall.

I agree with jardineratx that deadheading will help. I deadhead to get more blooms, but also to have less volunteers that I have to find homes for. Mine are called dinner plate hibiscus (at least they were 15 years ago when I got them), and they are totally winter hardy - just dying back and re-emerging next spring. I feed mine with the same fertilizer that I give to my azaleas, hydrangeas and ferns......acidic.
