More Snow Blessing or Curse?

After another 12 inches of snow here in eastern WI and close to 2 feet total,I'm looking at which trees I need to protect.I noticed on White cedar alot of them are bent over and buried in the snow.The deer and rabbits can't get them there,but I hope they stand up again next spring.

Apple trees with snow nearing tops of fence,I think I might try that deer away spray instead of more fencing.

I planted a wind break,and was hopeing that I could keep the deer off,well now it's under snow drifts 3-4 feet deep.

I planted a few Giant Sequoias in the back forty in 2007,this spring I thought they where toast.I checked them during deer season,and found three of them alive 2 look ok and the other looks real good.They lost there leaders but sent out new shoots.With all this snow they should be happy.

My biggest problem is with the snow so deep I'll have trouble walking very far,so those trees way back there don't get much help.

I guess we choose to live in Wisconsin, so we must like it snow and all. Personally a little warmer weather would be nice say mid 60's. And snow just for Christmas eve and Christmas Day would be nice. I too hate walking in the blasted stuff. Makes doing chores outside a real pain, but oh well. I guess it could be worse. From one Wisconsinite to another have a Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year, snow and all.

Wow, you had giant sequoias overwinter? That is very interesting, I have long thought about giving them a shot and thanks to your information, I might just do so.

We lose more plants due to lack of snow cover so actually I envy you.

And a merry christmas to all!

I have 2 more giant sequoias in the yard but I'm able to baby them.The biggest was 6ft tall but lost 2ft off the leader.Them this past summer a side branch took over,so now it's about 5ft tall.The other also lost some of it's leader then poured on the growth to 2 leaders that surpast the loss by at least a foot.In spring I'm going to try grafting one of the leaders onto new stock.
I also have 10-12 sequoias in pots,but those are in a old milk house for winter so I don't think thats a true test of there ability to survive.But the ones in the back forty where planted in s pring and left to fend for themselves.
If you are interested in trying to grow some go to giant-sequoia.com lots of good information.The sequoia is rated as being hardy in zone 6-9 so zone4 may be to cold,but hey if you want to try go ahead.What I'm doing is mulching good for winter to keep the ground from freezing and then bury them in snow if possible,but use powdery snow.They like fertile ground and moisture,but not wet conditions.

There is a sequoia growing in Wauwatosa thats 12ft tall,that is also zone 5.
There is also 4 sequoia's in Manistee, MI with the tallest at about 100ft tall,so under the right conditions they will survive.My hunch is that if you can keep them alive for 5-10 years they should make it on there own.Best of luck,and to all a good night.
