raised beds?

I would like to make some hosta gardens in my woods, problem is, the ground is so hard and rocky that it is extremely difficult to dig a hole in the ground. I would need to make some kind of raised bed, and would like to know the best way to do this so I won't damage any of the trees. We have mostly oaks and dogwoods. Any help would be appreciated.

Oaks have surface roots that are very important to the tree. we lost a couple because we didnt know.

Ditto the concern about oaks. That aside, if you could build your raised beds without excavating I guess that would do a little bit less damage to the tree roots. You might also want to check the soil forum. Maybe some little "mini-raised beds" here and there that are just sufficient for each individual plant would work and not stress the trees too much???

could you remove rocks and use that spot for holes? Thats what I do.LOL
