Damaged Tomato Stems

Hi everyone, this is my first post here on the tomato thread. I'm hoping someone can help me out. I started heirloom tomatoes from seed this year, it is my first time starting seeds and first time with heirloom tomatoes. Once they where ready to be planted I put up a trellis sort of thing( in the hopes they would become huge) They did okay for a while, despite the lousy spring we had here, and recently started growing. But now I noticed that right where the stems meet the soil they are turning brown and weakening. looks almost like just that 1/4 inch or so of stem is drying out, right at the soil line. Everything below and above the soil is fine. I already lost one tomato plant to this weird stem issue, but I thought maybe it got bent and that caused the damage. Its obvious now that is not the case. I just moved my remaining three plants into containers with potting mix, in case it is something with the soil or the ants. I have a million ants. Is it possible the ants are damaging the stems? But why only where the stem meets the soil? I should have taken pics, but I was worried and rushed to get them moved. I did plant them deeper than they where hoping the stems will either recover or the part above the damage will root. Any thoughts on whats going on would be appreciated, thanks.

Connie.
