Mine seem to be doing fine and my soil is very alkaline (Indiana limestone stuff). They are only about 10-12 years old, but they're doing great.

Around here they are mostly found on acid soils, but they also grow on limestone soils. I don't think they're picky about soil.

Yes. But I think trees tend to be less colorful sometimes when they're young, and look better as they age. (just like humans, hopefully!)

My soil is acidic,blackgum grows well here as does white oak,redoak,sweetgum, cherry,dogwood,if that helps any and yes it does have a beautiful scarlet color.If you can look toward the sun through the leaves the color is out of this world.
