Publishers would like it to be a no no. Other than that, there's nothing wrong with it.

Well I sent out my query to 36. Thank God for computers which makes that easy. In Writer's Market and Writer's Handbook which is where I got the addresses some publishers noted that they did not accept simultaneous submissions so I did not send the query to them. Of course some said they did not accept submissions except in January and I did not send it to them either. Then there were the ones who only accepted submissions from Australiam authors, nope, not them. I also ruled out one resticted to left-haded, red headed men. (Has anyone here ever read a Sherlock Holmes story about the red-headed league?) I never knew publishers were so finicky! The only down side is Kinko's got a lot of my money and so did the postal service. This does not necessarily mean I will get my book accepted but at least the rejection will not be strung out over years and years. In fact one of my rejections (eight so far) who told me they had changed policy and only accepted submissions in Sept. actually encouraged simultaneous submissions, saying they hoped everyone would apply lots of places because they saw so many good things that they could not publish. Anyway good luck!

Sending out multiple submissions is an author's way of trying to level the playing field. Some publishers want all the power, so to hell with them. It's a good idea to send out lots, and to P.S. that you have done so. It might make a dilatory publisher jump a little faster if he knows he has competition, and that you won't just sit still waiting for him to come out of his stupor.
