Tomato Update

Just had my first homegrown tomato and oh my... So that's what flavor taste like. Really, really good but I think the heat's stopping production but hopefully I'll get some more later when it's cooler.

I have three plants, two that were suckered off the other. Funny thing is the suckers are already taller than the parent plant and they look much, much healthier. I had to pinch back the main stem on the parent plant because it was going sideways so maybe that'd slowed it down. Does heat affect growth as well as production?

Oh yes I know the feeling or should I say I know taste difference between homegrown and store bought. Nice job! I know heat will slow production but I'm not sure if it will slow growth as well. I'm sure somebody will chime in on that part.

As long as your wattering keeps pace with the heat they will continue to grow and grow and grow (excluding determinates of course). When the temps get above 95sh fruit set typically stops but that changes as the temps moderate. I put on the 2' extensions on my CRW cages yesterday (making the cages 7') to give the plants somewhere to go.

If I could only have gotten my tomatoes out when I normally do, late March, I would have ripe Toms by now.

As long as thre is lots of sunshine, enough water and nutrients, and the temps are in the range that tomatoes like for fruitset they will produce forever.

Yepper, gotta say that the day you have that first truly vineripened tomato is a day that you will never forget. In fact, it might be hard for later years to match the excitement because of that first ever experience. However, whenever I have a good season I am not disappointed, it is just that I still remember that day when I tasted my very first Mexico tomato 20 years ago and realilzed that I had never, ever, really tasted a good tomato until that moment. I pass by those things that try to pass off as tomatoes in the grocery store thinking that so many people have never had a truly good tomato. I guess in their case, with nothing to compare to, ignorance is bliss.

My neighbor told me the other day that he too remembers the day I gave him some of my tomatoes. He said they were the best tomatoes he had ever tasted. I get those types of comments all the time. I have a couple who just moved into the house across the stret from me and I cannot think of a better way to introduce myself than to take them some really good tomatoes (that is of course if they like tomatoes). It is so funny, those who don't like tomatoes think we are obsessed people who need to get a life, while those who do like tomatoes tell us to keep doing what we are doing.

Yes, Tom, I totally agree about the ignorance-is-bliss-grocery-store-tomatoes, and us crazy obsessive tomato people LOL...they don't realize what they're missing!

thank for the tips. I'll probably have to just wait for my tomatoes to start again since I live in a drought area, but it'll be worth it. I was really satisfied with the tomatoes since I was a bit dissapointed with my green beans (I think they were stressed). Can't wait to see how the cucumbers turn out.
