seems i have a rodent

I was up in the patch last night. There are a couple tomatoes and some dahlias and cutting flowers. The Asters are being nibbled down to nothing and the snapdragons have been 'logged' beaver style. Cut down near ground level and disappeared. I disturbed a small dark creature making a run for it, under the fence and into its hiding spot. My tomatoes are starting to set fruit and Sungold is well on its way. I am starting to wonder about the varmint. Will it just eat the tomatoes it can reach from the ground? Being nightshade, are the plants toxic to the rodents too?(if that be the case then I won't have to worry about it 'logging' my tomato plants.) I guess I am wondering about possible damage. Will only the fruits near the ground be molested? That I can live with....I guess. (or can they climb?)
