Hall or No Hall?

We are currently adding on and remodeling our house. We are taking out a wall that separates a bedroom and the living area/kitchen to create a larger open family area. We are also adding on a master suite which will have a door that opens into this new space which is where my problem arises from. I don't really like the idea of my bedroom opening directly into the living room where everyone will be hanging out. The door is in a place where we could add a hallway down to it, but should I really waste some of my new space for a hallway? We have thought about a small entryway into the bedroom that will stick out into the living room space, but will this look ok?

Lots of times we see a small entry way, but generally instead of sticking out into the living room it would go into the new space and you would design around it. I think you will be happier if you provide a little buffer if you can swing it.

I think so too but I am worried about making my new bedroom too small. It is 18' x 14'. Do you think it will make the space seem too small with a piece cut out of it for the little entry?

I agree with Deborah about having a buffer from the bedroom. A 14x18 bedroom is a a good sized bedroom, so I don't think it would feel too small if you took some of the space away.

I definitely would want a hall, even if it's just a small one.

just do a two foot deep recess with double doors. This will define the space and not waste more on a hall. Add a couple of LED recessed cans one over each door.

You should create a vestibule area just outside your bedroom door. Create this space within the new space your adding not into the living area.

Well did you want the opposite opinion just to confuse you? If you can get away without a hallway I would say go for it. because they are a waste of space. If you have a huge house and you want the luxury of a hallway than go for it, but you don't need it. There are plenty of other ways to provide a bit of privacy if that is what you want.

I don't believe it is a waste of space at all, it will serve as a transition space taking you from public space to private space. You need more than a door to accomplish this transition. The walls of this space can display art, family photos, a piece of furniture, etc.

Hi, another thought: if you've just added a bedroom of square footage into the great room, why not take some space for a transition zone such that you have hall and perhaps a cabinet? It's kind of hard to verbalize but I don't mean a little bump out, I mean a straight line, make sense?

If you have a floor plan of the existing or what you are thinking of in terms of the addition you might get suggestions on how to incorporate some privacy for the master bedroom door. But in terms of design I agree there should be some separation between the public and private spaces.
