Tomato hornworm. Remove them and put them where the birds will see them, out in the open. They are delicious! For birds, that is.

If moved to a 'catch plant' -- a tomato vine set aside for that purpose, they will become one of the many species of those beautiful hummingbird moths which visit our gardens at dusk. They hover over the flowers and are often mistaken for hummingbirds.

I found one of these on one of my tomatoes this year and tossed it into the alley so the birds could get it. A mockingbird kept trying to pick it up, but the THW kept squirming and even raised it's head like it was going to attack the bird. It was like they were having a fight. The bird wasn't able to pick it up right away, but a little while later it must have gotten it or a bigger bird got it because it was gone. I guess the bird won. They will devour your tomatoes, so you should definitely pick it off unless you want to have the moth around your yard laying more eggs. The adult is fascinating to see, but I don't want their babies on my tomatos.

Yeah, the mocking birds will eat 'em, but they had rather have your tomatoes.

Oh, Jim, I dunno. Which would YOU rather have - a green tomato that is struggling to survive, or a nice, big, huge, juicy tomato hornworm??? I think I've made my point.

I didn't know thats where the Spinx moths came from. I haven't seen a single one this year but have a bunch of tiny green worms making swiss cheese out of all my brugmansia just since last night. I must have had a major hatch of some sort.

Yes! Sphinz moth one of the most beautiful and fascinating night creatures. They'll also eat datura if you have some of those to spare. I've not detroyed a single cat for these in years. They do not overrun the garden and strip it bare. Boy is it a treat to see one at night visiting the pentas etc.

I saw one tonight. There must be munchies around here other than my tomatoes.

You can also relocate them to daturas ("devil trumpets," cousins to brugmansia/angel's trumpets) and they'll eat those. That way you can have moths AND tomatoes. :)
