Sparse Looking Dwarf Magnolia

Is the Dwarf Magnolia tree naturally sparser looking than the non-dwarf variety?

I have 2 of them in my backyard and although they appear healthy and put out blooms they are not heavy in the leaves department, say compared to the Magnolias that I see in parking lots etc. ( I don't know if they're the dwarf varieties).

The landscapers planted the 2 trees last Fall, at which time they looked the same as they do now. I feed them with the same food as the camellias, azaleas, they also receive regular watering.

I thought they would fill out and screen the fence. Am I hoping for too much or do I need to prune?

Thanks!
