I receive a weekly e-mail from one of the local and best-known garden "centers"/stores in Austin. Their latest e-mail mentions top-dressing lawns and gardens with compost. Is this just a sales tactic or should I be doing this now? I've not put compost down in the past so close to winter.

I always thought it best to add compost earlier in the fall or in the spring.

Do you add compost to your beds at this time of year?
