Green Tomatoes

It's kind of a simple question, but I'm standing under the "newbie" sign, as it's my first year of gardening.

I have way too many tomato plants (I really didn't expect them to get that big) but they are happily supported on a trellis I built next to the house on the south side. I've had green tomatoes on many of them for over a month. The plants are different varieties, only one is a hybrid (and it's the only one i've gotten red tomatoes off of, but they are grape sized) ... the rest are heirloom.

So, the question is, do the tomato fruits THEMSELVES need any significant amount of light to ripen? The plants get a lot of sunlight, but many of the tomatoes are buried deep in the plant leaves, and I planted basil and peppers (which have turned out to be monsterous tomatillos ... something about a storm and my seedling pot identifiers falling out of the pots) parallel to the tomatoes (and close, square foot gardening) so there is a bit of shade on the tomatoes.

I have been staring at large green tomatoes for over a month. (There is a lot of fruit in general on the plants ... but it's all green ... and staying that way.)

Should I pick some and let them ripen on the counter? My honey keeps begging me for salsa.

Suggestions or thoughts? I appreciate your time and expertise.
