half a kilo tomato!!!!

I do have a photo...but have to remember how to post it here...

One weird thing with my tomatoes this year....

I am very careful when saving the seeds,

I am very careful storing them in seperate envelopes.

I am very careful starting them in small pete pots..

I make labels for everything, I even keep a page showing the layout of the plants as they grow indoors.

I plant them in the garden keeping them together with names...Now when they are growing ... things are wrong>??

White Queen is red, pink ping pong looks orange, some yellows are red. So something has happened...can't be cross polinated from last year can they??? They taste great, but I can't save seeds when they are not what they should be...so may just have to save and plant and forget the names>>>??? The half kilo one may be a Great Divide..

at least Aunt Ruby's German Green are Greeen...they are my favorite..martha/zucchini

Martha, that's a lot of wrong varieties that you're talking about.

What is your seed source? Is it frim seeds you saved yourself last year and were the varieties what they should be last year?? If so they sure could be crossed unless you bagged blossoms or grew the different varieties apart from each other.

or did you buy or trade seeds?

Great Divide is one of the varieties bred by Joe Bratka's father along with Box Car Willie, Mule Team, Red Barn and Pasture and should be a red beefsteak..

    Since there's 2.2 lb/kilo you've got a nice one lb fruit there.

    Thanks Carolyn...

All of the seeds this year are from seeds I saved last year and some from a few years earlier...
Today I see some white queens that are the right colour..
The Sudduth Brandywines are the biggest and red.
But I do think the problem is crossed, I don't bag and my plants are close together, even though I plant them in groups that are the same. I must have somehow messed some up, can't be that a gallo plum is a beefsteak..

They are all tasting great..except for a small almost oval deep yellow that is like a plum..and rather bland. I have no idea what it is from...waiting for Kelloggs breakfast to look right, and yellow brandywine. More tomatoes at one time than ever before...cheers, Martha/zucchini

    I'M JUST GREEN.
    GREEN I TELL YOU.
Most of my large tomatoes ripened long before they got to full size. We had a run of 95-98 deg. F. days here last week or so. Now we are freezing some nights, 3 of the last 5, so I don't think I will get any large ones this year at all.
    Good luck on getting more,
    James

I am jealous of all your inadvertent crosses. I planted close due to garden space and I am hoping for a Japanese Black Trifele/Black From Tula cross as well as a Hillbilly/Large Red Cherry Cross. I was going to manually pollinate but after mutilating enough buds, I decided to just look for PL varieties growing into RL from saved seed when I plant a couple years from now.

MMMMMmmmm...well...these crosses make it jut about impossible to save seeds and know what I am saving...
I did have a cross about 4 years ago...which produced a beautiful yellow heart shaped tomato on a plant with all reds...I have saved and re planted the seeds each year, and today I see that I have one plant with that tomato, the right shape, a large heart shape so far green...
For sure I have a few beautiful Sudduth Brandy Wines, a Cherokee Chocolate, Opalka, Marizol Purple...that look like they should. Can't find any of my yellow brandywines, but the red brandywine (one of the first tomato plants I ever had) is also as it should be. Can't spot any Kelloggs Breakfast but found one with smallish orange/yellow toms..
so it means more work sorting out what is here, and maybe keeping one of the crosses if it tasts good. This is the first year I have so many ripe tomatoes at one time...so I am freezing the sauce toms, and making sauce too..mostly slicing and eating...for breakfast, lunch and dinner...

One other good thing, this got me to re-read Caroly's book..it is sitting on our table and I read it out load..
    after each meal!!!!
