Spittlebugs are the nymphs of specific types of leafhoppers. The little critter inside keeps that froth around him for protection. Most people don't even know that there is an insect inside the globby spit wad. I mean, WHO would want to check it out? (Other than silly folks like myself.)
Though there are several different species (knowing the plants they are feeding on helps in ID), they all operate the same way. Both the young and the adults feed on plant juices by inserting a needle-like mouth-part and sucking. Depending upon the plant, the insect species, and other factors, spittlebugs are considered either very minor problems or very serious. If the former, little should be done to get rid of them. But if the population is very high and the plants (or grass) appears to be suffering, then applications of insecticidal soap are helpful.
