I'm going with Cecropia moth (Hyalophora cecropia). Neato!

Yup. It's very chippy and has been around awhile.

Thanks Day_By_Day!

Larry, by chippy, do you mean the tattered looking wings? I read they only live two weeks.

Beautiful moth! This post is timely for me because I think I've found a couple of first instar cats on a small Cherry tree. (See post on this page.)

I'm wondering the best way to rear them or if I should even try.

Yes, tattered. Two weeks is about the limit.

emmayct, there is a FAQ on the butterfly gardening forum about raising moths. Stuart_S of that forum has experience.

I have had good luck rearing cecropia (and others) by sleeving the branch the cats are on and moving to new branches as necessary. For sleeving I use no-see-um netting sewn into a pillowcase shape and sized in proportion the branch I wish to put it on. Secure it tightly around the branch, I use strips of bicycle tire inner tubes. Works great!! They are a fantastically beautiful caterpillar, particularly in their later instar forms, in my opinion.

I saw your thread emmayct. How exiciting if they turn out to be cecropia cats! Thanks for the tips on care more_to_grow. I'm looking for them now.
