Hello,

I live in TX and today I saw this fly, about the size of a large bee? perched vertically on a iron gate, it was squat, compact, didn't seem like a bee, eyes a little large, furry yellow legs. Maybe a Robberfly? but those seem to have chunky abdomens and this one was fairly rotund. something around in that category?

also, about a year or two ago, one day or two my wooded suburb yard had a temporary bee swarm, there were many flying around and loud, they were large and black and yellow/cream? it impressed me

also, what is a good insect field guide?
