Growing indoors

I live in an apartment that has unobstructed western light. I'd really appreciate any suggestions about varieties of tomatoes that would work in this circumstance. Interested in small "bushy" types and small trailing one that would work in hanging baskets.

Any ideas about hot peppers would also be great.

Thanks,

Bill in Manhattan

    Hello Manhattan Bill,

I worked midtown 4 years. I miss the food at the Stage Deli and those great pizza joints! This was late 80's.

How many hours of sun you get? Western isn't as good as southern. I grow tomatoes in a sunny dining room bay window all winter and they do well. No artificial lighting either, just sunshine. My window is a southern exposure though.

I recommend Red Robin. It's a dwarf that grows 16 to 18 inches tall tops and also about the same width. One inch tomaotes a little larger than most cherry varieties but I'd still call Red Robin a cherry type. I grow in 8 inch pots. Some people grow them in 6 inch pots.

'Tumbler' might be one to consider for your hanging type.

But really I wouldn't try it without a good 5 to 6 hours of sunlight.

Thanks bigdaddy, I'll give them a try. The exposure is actually more north-west, because Manhattan runs SW x NE, but there's sunshine pretty much all afternoon. I'll be a sport and go for a couple of packets of seeds.

Any thoughts about other stuff that you grow successfully?

Haven't been to the Stage in decades, but I still remember a roastbeef sandwich I had there in the '60s! Pizza still going strong, although I got addicted to the thin-crust variety down at the Jersey shore this summer.

    All the best,
    Bill

Bill, I have extra Red Robin seed. See if the Email thing is working on my GW profile page by clicking My Page next to my name and zone 7. I'll send you some.

Yeah the Stage has great sandwiches and pickles. I liked the Billy Martin and Yogi Berra sandwiches. man I miss that place. I was a semi regular there.

Last year I grew a huge indeterminate tomato plant in there. 'Momotaro'. I had delicious tomatoes all winter. This year I'm going to try TWO Momotaro plants in that window. It's a big window...:)

I grew dwarf pepper plants in this window too. I can't remember the names. I have some seeds from a tiny orange sweet bell pepper I could also send. The plant stays under two feet tall and gives loads of 1 to 2 inch small orange bells. The other pepper plants I window grew were ornamentals.

The point is window growing certainly can be done with enough direct sunlight.

    Big Daddy,
I sent the email. Did you get it?
I don't much care to put my address up here, but if you send an email to wmeyer1947@yahoo.com, I'll send one back with the address.

    Thanks,
    Bill
