Thanks for posting this....not enough people know about brown widows. In some locations (warmer climates), they are becoming more common than black widows..and that's kinda scary.

I keep looking for them in my northern Alabama garage but so far just the usual population of the black widows.

I'm in Vero Beach, Fl. Moved down here from south central Ohio and had never heard of Brown Widows. Had to Google to figure out it wasn't a Black Widow. The egg sack is so distinctive.

I think the Browns are the only thing I've seen right here, although Blacks are supposedly around. Usually I spot the egg sacks under the overhang of the roof. Or like in the first post, on the back porch.

Nice pictures, I just killed a black widow last night. My daughter was sitting in the chair outside. I walked out and calmly told her to get up. Well she jumped up, she is deathly afraid of spiders. I took a few pictures of it with my cell phone, all the while she is screaming for me to kill it. I heard the brown widow is more poisonous than the black, is this true?

I think when I searched, I found conflicting views? I don't remember. I also think they said the black was more agressive, the brown more docile? They can both stay away from me. If I ever get around to journeying into my attic to do some work, I'll fog it first. :)

Chug....what fabulous pictures! The egg sac is one of the most important identifying features. That small spider is the male.

Neither spider species are aggressive. The venom of the brown widow is more potent, but they apparently inject far less of it. Both are nocturnal hunters, leaving those webs to seek their prey.

Thank you Rhizo.

It's good to know neither is aggressive and that the brown is likely to inject less venom. I suppose they're both here. I probably just notice the browns more because of the unique egg sac.

I don't worry much about them. They're usually up high and outside when I see them. Inside would be a different story. :)
