Not a hognose snake, I just loked at the photos online.....can't possibly be a copperhead either could it? It was not a light color! I looked at some photos and it miht be a water moccasin? We have a pool about 6 feet from where it was! It was a baby obviouly about 6"-8" long! It was sitting on the rug on our patio!!!! I have a Pug dog so was worried a snake bite could harm him? Also we have a 17 month old son....ahhhhhh!!! Anyone else have any ideas??

Well, I hate snakes more than anyone, so I have been learning poisonous from non-poisonous, and I'm not certain, but I don't think this is a poisonous snake. Can't be sure since the head is chopped off.

However, the markings certainly look a lot like an Eastern hognose snake. Maybe a Diamondback Water Snake?? There aren't any rattlers on the tail, are there? What about some kind of rat snake??

Try posting it on Reptiles & Amphibians. Someone should be able to help you identify the snake.

spishack is right. It is a harmless Watersnake.

ltcollins got the subspecies of watersnake right.

The subspecies is Nerodia rhombifer or the Diamondback Water Snake (not to be confused with Diamondback Rattlesnakes).

This appears to be a copperhead. Dont let the dull colors fool you as I have killed many that looked just like that and at first I was confused but it was confirmed. They are abundant in Brazoria county and when I lived at Demi John I had the misfortune of dealing with many of them. Rarely will you find one over 2' lg and if it had a triangular head then that would confirm it. Nasty little snake can crawl under short grass and you will never see them. Keep you yard mowed short as the shorter the grass the less they like it.

not a copperhead - their bands always make an hourglass shape. The others were right, it's a diamondback watersnake.

It's a Texas Rat Snake.

non-venomous, grow quite large, good predator of rodents. The largest native snake in the Houston area. I've seen them around the house from time to time. Don't mess with them as they are somewhat nasty and known to bite.
