termites in sandbox

I found termites in my son's sandbox, which is made out of untreated wood next to my vegetable garden.

Do termites pose any risks to humans other than eating the wooden structures? Do they bite like ants or similar?

I do not want to apply pesticides to the sandbox because I am concerned about my son's health if he plays in the sandbox and about exposing the vegetables to the poison. If I pour boiling water around the edges of the sandbox, will it kill the termites?

Do I have any other options than pesticides? What if I just leave them? Will they likely move on to the house next?

Thanks for your help,

ange
